Today, I finished Chapter 4 of my dissertation.
Just typing that sentence feels surreal. Chapter 4, the heart of the research. The stories, the voices, the patterns. It’s where the data breathes, and after what feels like a lifetime of listening, coding, recoding, and reflecting, this chapter now lives on the page.
When I think back to the beginning of this journey, it all started with a question, a spark of curiosity, and the hope that my work might contribute something meaningful. I remember the first emails I sent to potential participants, not knowing who would respond or what stories would emerge. I remember the nervous excitement of the first interview and the deep sense of responsibility that settled in as I listened to each person share their story.
Then came the coding, hours and hours of poring over transcripts, highlighting phrases, assigning meaning, looking for patterns, and honoring the nuance in every word. There were moments when the data felt too big, the codes too messy, and the themes just out of reach. But little by little, the pieces began to speak to each other. And with that, Chapter 4 began to take shape.
Finishing this chapter feels like reaching a mountain ledge after a long, winding hike. Not the peak yet, but a real, solid place to rest and take in how far I’ve come. It took a lot to get here. It took showing up even when I didn’t feel like it, trusting the process when it felt like I was moving in circles, and believing that consistency would pay off, even when progress was slow.
This milestone reminds me that the work we care about most rarely happens all at once. It happens one small step at a time. Whether it’s writing a dissertation, launching a project, or simply trying to finish what we start, we get there by showing up, again and again.
To everyone who shared their time, their voice, and their stories with me, THANK YOU! Your insights, honesty, and courage are the foundation of this work. I carry your words with deep respect and gratitude.
So here’s to the long journey. Here’s to the emails, the interviews, the transcripts, the codes, the cups of coffee, the self-doubt, and the breakthroughs. Here’s to taking steps, one at a time.
And cheers to starting Chapter 5.
Let’s keep going.
